Day 30

Day 30 – Wednesday May 23rd

A – Today’s reading of the day is James Chapter 5 (21st Century King James Version for me this last time through)

Focal verses today are James 5:19-20 “Brethren, if any of you err from the truth and one convert him, let him know that he who converteth the sinner from the error of this way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.”

…same verse from the MSG “My dear friends, if you know people who have wandered off from God's truth, don't write them off. Go after them. Get them back and you will have rescued precious lives from destruction and prevented an epidemic of wandering away from God.”

B – RHEMA Strike Verse of the day: 1 Kings 2:2 “I am going the way of all the earth.  Be strong therefore, and show yourself a man.”      (Manhood/White)

C – Excerpt from “Wild at Heart” by John Eldridge:
“Why have I said all this about our search for validation and the answer to our question?  Because we cannot hear the real answer until we see we’ve got a false one.  So long as we chase the illusion, how can we face reality?  The hunger is there; it lives in our souls like a famished craving, no matter what we’ve tried to fill it with.”

D – Today’s input:  THE QUEST!  Are you ready for Thursday night?  Get ready for a weekend unlike any other.  Get ready to have a difference made in your life.  Get ready to make a difference in other people’s life.  Get ready for God!  Let’s clear the past, make a stand in the present, and strengthen the future.

E – Today’s prayer focus:  Pray that God will make a difference in your life and the life of others this weekend.  Pray for the men addressed on this email.

F – Encouragement and closing thoughts: Have you finished reading “Wild at Heart”?  Have you been working on memorizing the 7 “Rhema Strike Verses”?

Day 29

Day 29 – Tuesday May 22nd

A – Today’s reading of the day is James Chapter 4 (21st Century King James Version for me this last time through)

Focal verses today are James 4:9 & 14 “Be afflicted and mourn and weep.  Let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. …whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow.  For what is your life?  It is even a vapor that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”

B – RHEMA Strike Verse of the day: 1 Kings 2:2 “I am going the way of all the earth.  Be strong therefore, and show yourself a man.”      (Manhood/White)

C – Excerpt from “Wild at Heart” by John Eldridge:
“At last, I am surrounded by wilderness.  The wind in the top of the pines behind me sounds like the ocean.  Waves are rushing in from the great blue above, cresting upon the ridge of the mountain I have climbed, …”

D – Today’s input: Hopefully we have all experience the saving grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As you look at your salvation experience you need to remember the “A” of the “ABCs of Salvation”. “A” is for “Admit”. Admit that you are a sinner and in need of a Savior. Each one of us fights daily with sin. Look at the sin in your life. You may not have some great hidden evil deed but we all have sin and any small amount of sin is all it takes to separate us from the Holy God. What sin(s) in your life is keeping you from having a deeper, more intimate relationship with God? Bring those before God and turn from sin to Him. It is no longer time to wallow in your sin.

E – Today’s prayer focus:  Admit to God you are a sinner and ask Him to forgive you of your sins.

F – Encouragement and closing thoughts: Are you ready to stand on the edge of a mountain to hear God speak directly to you?  Are you ready to have Father pass in front of you so you can catch a glimpse of how Holy and magnificent He is?  As exciting as we are about going to the mountain, you don’t have to wait.  God is ready today!  Are you?

Day 28

Day 28 – Monday May 21st

A – Today’s reading of the day is James Chapter 3 (21st Century King James Version for me this last time through)

Focal verses today are James 3:5-6 & 8 “Even so the tongue is a little member and boasteth great things.  Behold, how great a wood a little fire kindleth!  And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity.  So is the tongue among our members that it defileth the whole body and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire from hell.  But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.”

B – RHEMA Strike Verse of the day: 1 Kings 2:2 “I am going the way of all the earth.  Be strong therefore, and show yourself a man.”      (Manhood/White)

C – Excerpt from “Wild at Heart” by John Eldridge:
“The realm of God is dangerous, … You must enter into it and not just seek information about it.”

D – Today’s input:  Sunday, yesterday, is the day we set aside each week for the Lord.  It isn't a day for us or the things we can do or even want to do.  It is the day for the Lord.  As we get closer to the Quest it is important that we let God work in our hearts and in our minds.  Today focus on him (and not self).  Not what we can say or do, but what he can do through us.

E – Today’s prayer focus:  God.  God speak to me today. Search my heart and reveal yourself to me.

F – Encouragement and closing thoughts: Spend time with God today.  Put him first in everything we think, say, and do.

Day 27

Day 27 – Sunday May 20th

A – Today’s reading of the day is James Chapter 2 (21st Century King James Version for me this last time through)

Focal verses today are James 2:2-3 & 9 “For if there come into your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment, and ye have respect for him that weareth the grand clothing and say unto him, "Sit thou here in a good place," and say to the poor man, "Stand thou there," or, "Sit here under my footstool,".  But if ye have respect of persons, ye commit sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.”

B – RHEMA Strike Verse of the day: 1 Kings 2:2 “I am going the way of all the earth.  Be strong therefore, and show yourself a man.”      (Manhood/White)

C – Excerpt from “Wild at Heart” by John Eldridge:
“The world is a carnival of counterfeits – counterfeit battles, counterfeit adventures, counterfeit beauties.  Men should think of it as a corruption of their strength.  Battle your way to the top, says the world, and you are a man.  Why is it then that the men who get there are often the emptiest, most frightened, prideful posers around?  They are mercenaries, battling only to build their own kingdoms.  There is nothing transcendent about their lives.”

D – Today’s input:  God shows no favoritism. Acts 10:34 “Then Peter opened his mouth and said: 'In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality.”  Romans 2:11 “For there is no partiality with God.”  Favoritism devalues people for whom Christ died and indicates an ignorance of God's values.  It is dangerous and unwise to show favoritism in a family.  Genesis 37:3-4 “Now as it happened, Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other children, because Joseph was born to him in his old age. So one day Jacob gave him a special gift—a brightly colored coat. His brothers of course noticed their father's partiality, and consequently hated Joseph; they couldn't say a kind word to him.”  How do you treat people you encounter?  How do you treat your own family member, your own kids?

E – Today’s prayer focus:  Ask God to help you treat “all” others as He would treat them.

F – Encouragement and closing thoughts:  Do something this weekend for someone who you wouldn’t normally do something for.

Day 26

Day 26 – Saturday May 19th

A – Today’s reading of the day is James Chapter 1 (21st Century King James Version for me this last time through)

Focal verse today is James 1:6 & 23-24 “But let him ask in faith, never wavering; for he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind.  For if any be a hearer of the Word and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a mirror; for he beholdeth himself, and then goeth his way and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.”

B – RHEMA Strike Verse of the day: 1 Kings 2:2 “I am going the way of all the earth.  Be strong therefore, and show yourself a man.”      (Manhood/White)

C – Excerpt from “Wild at Heart” by John Eldridge:
“You must ask God what he thinks of you, and you must stay with the question until you have an answer.  The battle will get fierce here.  This is the last thing the Evil One wants you to know.”

D – Today’s input:  What is Perseverance?  Webster says “to continue a course of action, in spite of difficulty, opposition”.  I looked in the thesaurus also and one of the words was “pluck”.  I was thinking what in the world does perseverance have to do with pluck.  Then it hit me!  It’s got nothing to do with “in the world”.  It’s got to do with the fact that we, as Christians, have been plucked out of this world.  We have been plucked from our sins by a Savior who loves us and cares for us.  So it makes me think about the verse that says “If God is for us, who can be against us”.  Then I thought if He has done that for me, and He has, then doesn’t He deserve for me to show and live perseverance.  I need to continue in His course of action (in my life), in spite of the difficulties and oppositions that oppose me and oppose Him.  So I have no need, or even right, to waver or to be a hearer without being a doer.  We know that.  But like the man looking in the mirror we turn away time and time again.

E – Today’s prayer focus:  Ask that God will give you the ability to persevere for Him.

F – Encouragement and closing thoughts:  All it takes is a step in the right direction.  Take that step today.  Facing difficulties?  Ask God to show you His way through it.

Day 25

Day 25 – Friday May 18th

A – Today’s reading of the day is James Chapter 5 (New American Standard (NAS) for me.)

Focal verses today are James 5:7-8 “Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord.  The farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil, being patient about it, until it gets the early and late rains.  You too be patient; strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near.”

B – RHEMA Strike Verse of the day: 2 Samuel 10:12 “Be strong, and let us show ourselves courageous for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God, and may the LORD do what is good in His sight.”    (Courage/Purple)

C – Excerpt from “Wild at Heart” by John Eldridge:
“True strength does not come out of bravado.  Until we are broken, our life will be self-centered, self-reliant; our strength will be our own.  So long as you think you are really something in and of yourself, what will you need God for?  I don’t trust a man who hasn’t suffered; I don’t let a man get close to me who hasn’t faced his wound.  Think of the posers you know -- are they the kind of man you would call at 2:00 A.M., when life is collapsing around you?”

D – Today’s input:  Are you in a hurry?  Are you busy?  What for?  Are you busy for God?  Maybe you need to slow down and take a look around you.  What’s going on around you, with your family, your work, your church?  Are you planting (spending your time and energy) fruitfulness?  What will be the results, the harvest of everything you are doing?

E – Today’s prayer focus:  That our focus and energies will be used for God’s fruitfulness and that we will use the gifts He has given us without getting caught up in ourselves, our distractions.

F – Encouragement and closing thoughts:  Call someone today just to say hi.  How about sending someone (like me) an email, just because.

Day 24

Day 24 – Thursday May 17th

A – Today’s reading of the day is James Chapter 4 (New American Standard (NAS) for me.)

Focal verse today is James 4:17 “Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.”

“These men knew they were at war, yet they refused to act like it.  They lived in a dangerous denial – a denial that not only endangered them but countless others who depended on them to do their part.”

D – Today’s input:  Ah, the proverbial fence.  We’ve all heard the story about sitting on the fence being lukewarm. God says that we would either be hot or be cold.  I know that there are times within my own thoughts and even my actions where I fit right in with James 4:17.  Usually starts with a thought of “a little won’t hurt” and BOOM I’m caught red handed.  What happens is we get distracted and lose our focus.  Not keeping our focus on Him and the promise given in James 1:12.  Here are three other verses I’ll let you look up on your own and think about: Luke 12:47, John 9:41, and 2 Peter 2:21.

E – Today’s prayer focus: Pray that we will allow God to work on us and ask for help in avoiding the distractions.

F – Encouragement and closing thoughts:  We live in the flesh and we have to deal with the flesh, but there is hope in the Father and he is always there to help.  Turn from your sin and He will be there IMMEDIATELY.

Day 23

Day 23 – Wednesday May 16th

A – Today’s reading of the day is James Chapter 3 (New American Standard (NAS) for me.)

Focal verses today are James 3:13-18 “Who among you is wise and understanding?  Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom.  But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth.  This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic.  For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing.  But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.  And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”

“The control we so desperately crave is an illusion.  Far better to give it up in exchange for God’s offer of ...”

D – Today’s input:  We have a lot of useless stuff stored in our hearts and in our heads.  It’s time to start purging it and replacing it with useful stuff, meaningful stuff, and righteous stuff.  What kinds of junk are you holding on to?  What kinds of hurts haven’t you let go of?  It is time to clear our past and prepare for the future.

E – Today’s prayer focus: Ask God to help you deal with the useless and dead stuff that we continue to store and hold on to.

F – Encouragement and closing thoughts:  You may not be able to clear everything out today but it is important to let God know you are willing to allow Him to work on you and with you.

Day 22

Day 22 – Tuesday May 15th

A – Today's reading of the day is James Chapter 2 (New American Standard (NAS) for me.)

Focal verses today are James 2:19 "You believe that God is one, you do well; the demons also believe, and shudder."

B – RHEMA Strike Verse of the day: 2 Samuel 10:12 "Be strong, and let us show ourselves courageous for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God, and may the LORD do what is good in His sight."    (Courage/Purple)

C – Excerpt from "Wild at Heart" by John Eldridge:
"In the past year or so I've made a number of decisions that make no sense unless there is a God and I am his friend."

D – Today's input:  I'm sure each one of you know there is a God.  Can each of you say to yourself "I know God"?  Can you say that God is your friend?  Better yet can you say that you are God friend?  I hope each of you take the time today to discover inside yourself what if really means to know God and know that he is your friend.

E – Today's prayer focus: Pray that you will draw close to God so that he may draw close to you.  Sound familiar?

F – Encouragement and closing thoughts:  Spend time with God today (and every day).  Share him with others in your family, friendships, work, play, and with anyone that passes your way.

Day 21

Day 21 – Monday May 14th

A – Today's reading of the day is James Chapter 1 (New American Standard (NAS) for me.)

Focal verses today are James 1:2-3 "Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance."

Review of the day: Verse 4 "And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing."  Verse 16 "Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren."  Verse 17 "Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow."

"This deep intimate union with Jesus and with his Father is the source of all our healing and all our strength."

D – Today's input:  Bear down, dig in, now is not the time to be slack or give up.

E – Today's prayer focus: Ask God to give you the ability to see things as He sees things, to see people as He sees people, and to see yourself as He sees you.

F – Encouragement and closing thoughts:   (I'm saying this with a Rob Schneider accent): "You can do it!"

Day 20

Day 20 – Sunday May 13th

A – Today's reading of the day is James Chapter 5 (NLT for me.)

Focal verse today is James 5:12 "But most of all, my brothers and sisters, never take an oath, by heaven or earth or anything else. Just say a simple yes or no, so that you will not sin and be condemned."

Review of the day: Verse 10 "For examples of patience in suffering, dear brothers and sisters, look at the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord."  Verse 11 "We give great honor to those who endure under suffering. For instance, you know about Job, a man of great endurance. You can see how the Lord was kind to him at the end, for the Lord is full of tenderness and mercy."

B – RHEMA Strike Verse of the day: Micah 6:8 "He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?"    (Knowledge/Blue)

C – Excerpt from "Wild at Heart" by John Eldridge:
"A man is fierce ... passionate ... wild at heart? You wouldn't know it from what normally walks around in a pair of trousers. If a man is the image of the Lion of Judah, how come there are so many lonely women, so many fatherless children, so few men around?"

D – Today's input:  Where can you go (or get to) on your own?  I'm sure a lot of us could show a lot of what we've accomplished and things that we have done.  You may be smarter than the average bear and maybe even stronger than one.  But where does that actually get you?  Maybe with men it gets you pretty far.  Look back at your accomplishments and see what you can credit God with.  You should be able to credit Him with everything you've done.  That is unless you've done something in a way that wouldn't be looked upon the right way.  You may have to re-think that accomplishment and think about tossing it aside.  Do and keep that which is right.

E – Today's prayer focus:  Pray to God in a blessing of what He has accomplished in you and with what He has done through you.  Thank Him for your strengths and also thank Him for your weaknesses.

F – Encouragement and closing thoughts: Our weakness is His strength.  Don't attempt to cover up a shortcoming, instead learn to trust God more in that area.  Let your 'yes' be 'yes' – don't hide behind lies any longer.

Day 19

Day 19 – Saturday May 12th

A – Today's reading of the day is James Chapter 4 (NLT for me.)

Focal verses today are James 4:5 "What do you think the Scriptures mean when they say that the spirit God has placed within us is filled with envy?"

Review verses:  Verse 7-8 "So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.  Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world."

            "Isaiah 61:

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me;
because the Lord has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release for the prisoners. (v.1)"

D – Today's input:  WHAT ARE YOU DOING?  I ask because I want you to review what you are doing and verify it is what He would want you to be doing.  If He isn't #1 then we might as well set him aside because that is the only position that he wants (and deserves for that matter).  Look what he has done for you, (EVERYTHING). Look at what he has given you, (EVERYTHING).  What is keeping you/us from giving Him everything?

E – Today's prayer focus: Praise God for who He is.  Thank Him for what he has given you.

F – Encouragement and closing thoughts:  Now do something about it.  Do something for Him.

Rhema on pictures

Day 18

Day 18 – Friday May 11th

A – Today's reading of the day is James Chapter 3 (NLT for me.)

Focal verse James 3:2 "Indeed, we all make many mistakes.  For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way."

Review verses: Verse 8 "but no one can tame the tongue.  It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison."  Verse 10 "And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth.  Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right!"

"A man needs to know his name.  He needs to know he's got what it takes.  And I don't mean "know" in the modernistic, rationalistic sense.  I mean a deep knowing, the kind of knowing that comes when you have been there, entered in, experienced firsthand in an unforgettable way."

D – Today's input:  As men we have the responsibility to lead the way whether we want to or not.  We aren't perfect though and we will make mistakes.  We need to learn from them, pick up with His ways and continue on.  James talks a lot about our actions; today he shows us that our words have a significant effect on people as well.  What we say and do can be either a great influence or a great hindrance to the people around us.

E – Today's prayer focus: That we will lead as the men God has made us and that we will strive to be more like him in our thoughts, words, and actions.

F – Encouragement and closing thoughts: Yesterday we were to do something nice for someone unexpectedly.  Today, go out of your way to say something meaningful and purposeful to someone.

Day 17

Day 17 – Thursday May 10th

A – Today's reading of the day is James Chapter 2 (NLT for this time.)

Focal verse today is James 2:14 "What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don't show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone?"

Review verses 4 "doesn't this discrimination show that your judgments are guided by evil motives?" 8 "Yes indeed, it is good when you obey the royal law as found in the Scriptures: "Love your neighbor as yourself." 20 "How foolish! Can't you see that faith without good deeds is useless?"

"Most of us have been misinterpreting life and what God is doing for a long time.  "I think I'm just trying to get God to make my life work easier," a client of mine confessed, but he could have been speaking for most of us.  We're asking the wrong questions.  Most of us are asking, "God, why did you let this happen to me?" or, "God, why won't you just... (fill in the blank..)... God requires a new set of questions; What are you trying to teach me here?  What issues in my heart are you trying to raise through this?  What is it you want me to see?  What are you asking me to let go of?"

D – Today's input:  It isn't always easy to do the right thing.  But it is the right thing and isn't that worth it?  God is always worth the extra we put in to the things we do.  Take that extra measure to overcome the easy and embrace what is good.  If you put 110% into something, isn't it worth the return?  If you put 75% into something, then don't expect a full portion in life.  Pour yourself into God's plan completely and then and only then you will be complete. Complete sacrifice = complete satisfaction.

E – Today's prayer focus: Father, I have not always done what is right. I want that to change right now.  Help me to sacrifice the easy to obtain what is right.  Let me have faith that changes my actions and proves that I'm yours completely.

F – Encouragement and closing thoughts: Look for someone today and do something good that isn't expected.

Day 16

Day 16 – Wednesday May 9th

A – Today's reading of the day is James Chapter 1 (Day 16 starts our 4th time through James. I will be using the New Living Translation (NLT) this time around.)

Focal verse today is James: 1:3 "For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow."

Review of the day: Verses "12 God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. 14 Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. 22 But don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves."

B – RHEMA Strike Verse of the day: Galatians 2:20 "I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and delivered Himself up for me."      (Vision/Red)

C – Excerpt from "Wild at Heart" by John Eldridge:
"But for many, many men their souls still hang in the balance because no one, no one has ever invited them to be dangerous, to know their own strength, to discover that they have what it takes.  "I feel there is this stormy ocean with me, and I keep trying to make those waters calm and placid," confessed a young friend in his early twenties.  "I would love to be dangerous," he said, sighing.  "You mean ... it's possible?  I feel like I have to ask permission."  Why on earth would a young man have to ask permission to be a man?"

D – Today's input:  Can you see what God has given you?  Can you see what God wants you to do?  I can guarantee that it doesn't have anything to do with how well off you are or what you've been able to do with your things.  What we have can fade, go away.  Use the things that God has given you, not for your good or desire but, for his good and glory.  If you don't he may just take it away and/or give it to someone else.  Also be happy, satisfied with what he has given you.  The key is to remember it is his anyway.  The sooner and better you treat it that way, the better it and you will be.

E – Today's prayer focus: Ask God to show you what he has given you and ask God to give you the ability/desire to use it for him.  This could include possession, gifts/abilities, friends, and even family.

F  – Encouragement and closing thoughts:   Do what is right and if you stumble, turn to him and let him pick you up.

Day 15

Day 15 – Tuesday May 8th

A – Today's reading of the day is James Chapter 5 (MSG for me)

Focal verse today is James 5:9 "Friends, don't complain about each other.  A far greater complaint could be lodged against you, you know.  The Judge is standing just around the corner."

Review of the day: Verse 5 "You've looted the earth and lived it up.  But all you'll have to show for it is a fatter than usual corpse."  Verses 10-11 "Take the old prophets as your mentors.  They put up with anything, went through everything, and never once quit, all the time honoring God.  What a gift life is to those who stay the course!  You've heard, of course, of Job's staying power, and you know how God brought it all together for him at the end.  That's because God cares, cares right down to the last detail."  Verse 16 "Make this your common practice: Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you can live together whole and healed.  The prayer of a person living right with God is something powerful to be reckoned with."

""When I was eight", confesses Brennan Manning, "the imposter, or false self, was born as a defense against pain.  The impostor within whispered, 'Brennan, don't ever be your real self anymore because nobody likes you as you are.  Invent a new self that everybody will admire and nobody will know.'"  Notice the key phrase: "as a defense against pain," as a way of saving himself.  The impostor is our plan for salvation.  So God must take it all away."

D – Today's input:  Are you trying to do things on your own?  I don't care if it is acts of righteousness or acts of disobedience.  You don't have to do things alone.  Call upon a brother to help even when you are doing good things.  It is nice to be around a friend and you can accomplish even more.  When you are down and stumbling, call upon a brother to help lift you up.  It is true that God can bring someone along to help but maybe it's God's will that you ask.

E – Today's prayer focus:  Pray for a friend, one that you could help, but also one that could help you.

F – Encouragement and closing thoughts: You've heard the ol' statement.  "A friend in need is a friend in deed."  A friend that you reach out to could also be the friend that reaches out to you.

Day 14

Day 14 – Monday May 7th

A – Today's reading of the day is James Chapter 4 (MSG for me)

Focal verse today is James 4:6 "And what he gives in love is far better than anything else you'll find. It's common knowledge that "God goes against the willful proud; God gives grace to the willing humble. "

Review of the day: Verse 4 "You're cheating on God. If all you want is your own way, flirting with the world every chance you get, you end up enemies of God and his way."  Verses 7b-8a "Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he'll be there in no time."

"Guys are unanimously embarrassed by their emptiness and woundedness; it is for most of us a tremendous source of shame, as I've said.  But it need not be.  From the very beginning, back before the Fall and the assault, ours was meant to be desperately dependent existence.  It's like a tree and its branches, explains Christ.  You are the branches, I am the trunk.  From me you draw your life, that's how it was meant to be.  In fact, he goes on to say, "Apart from me you can do nothing" (John 15:5).  He's not berating us or mocking us or even saying it with a sigh, all the while thinking, I wish they'd pull it together and stop needing me so much.  Not at all.  We are made to depend on God; we are made for unison with him and nothing about us works right without it.  As C.S. Lewis wrote, "A car is made to run on gasoline, and it would not run properly on anything else.  Now God designed the human machine to run on himself.  He himself is the fuel our spirits were designed to burn, or the food our spirits were designed to feed on.  There is no other."

D – Today's input: Get with God.  Completely forget about yourself and completely forget about you doing it yourself.  Get with God.

E – Today's prayer focus: Release yourself to God.  Release your burdens, cares, and fears.

F – Encouragement and closing thoughts:  Draw nigh to God and God will draw nigh to you.

Day 13

Day 13 – Sunday August 16th

A – Today’s reading of the day is James Chapter 3 (MSG for me)

Focal verse today is James 3:9 “With our tongues we bless God our Father; with the same toungues we curse the very men and women he made in his image.”

Review of the day: Verses 14-18 “Mean-spirited ambition isn't wisdom. Boasting that you are wise isn't wisdom. Twisting the truth to make yourselves sound wise isn't wisdom. It's the furthest thing from wisdom--it's animal cunning, devilish conniving. Whenever you're trying to look better than others or get the better of others, things fall apart and everyone ends up at the others' throats. Real wisdom, God's wisdom, begins with a holy life and is characterized by getting along with others. It is gentle and reasonable, overflowing with mercy and blessings, not hot one day and cold the next, not two-faces. You can develop a healthy, robust community that lives right with God and enjoy its results only if you do the hard work of getting along with each other, treating each other with dignity and honor.”

B – RHEMA Strike Verse of the day: Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and delivered Himself up for me.” (Vision/Red)

C – Excerpt from “Wild at Heart” by John Eldridge:
“A boy learns who he is and what he's got from a man, or the company of men. He cannot learn it any other place. He cannot learn it from other boys, and he cannot learn it from the world of women. The plan from the beginning of time was that his father would lay the foundation for a boy's heart, and pass on to him that essential knowledge and confidence in his strength. Dad would be the first man in his life, and forever the most important man. Above all, he would answer the questions for his son and give him his name.”

D – Today’s input: Who or what has made you the man that you are? What are you doing to show the boys in your life how to be men?

E – Today’s prayer focus: That God would show us what type of man to be and to live in a way that would show others God in us.

F – Encouragement and closing thoughts: Be the man!

Day 12

Day 12 – Saturday August 15th

A – Today’s reading of the day is James Chapter 2 (MSG for me)

Focal verse today is James 2:13 “For if you refuse to act kindly, you can hardly expect to be treated kindly. Kind mercy wins over harsh judgment every time.”

Review of the day: Verse 5 “Listen, dear friends. Isn’t it clear by now that God operates quite differently? He chose the world’s down-and-out as the kingdom’s first citizens, with full rights and privileges. This kingdom is promised to anyone who loves God.” Verse 8 “You do well when you complete the Royal Rule of the Scriptures: “Love others as you love yourself.” Verse 10 “You can’t pick and choose in these things, specializing in keeping one or two things in God’s law and ignoring others.” Verses 25 “The same with Rahab. Wasn’t her action in hiding God’s spies and helping them escape—that seamless unity of believing and doing—what counted with God?”

B – RHEMA Strike Verse of the day: James 1:12 “Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.” (Perseverance/Gold)

C – Excerpt from “Wild at Heart” by John Eldridge:
“Dave runs into Bob in the church lobby. Both are wearing their happy faces, though neither is happy at all. “Hey, Bob, how are ya?” Bob is actually furious at his wife and ready to leave her, but he says, “Great, just great, Dave. The Lord is good!” Dave, on the other hand, hasn’t believed in the goodness of God for years, ever since his daughter was killed. “Yep – God is good, all the time. I’m just so glad to be here, praising the Lord.” “Me too. Well, I’ll be praying for you!” I would love to see a tally of the number of prayers actually prayed against the number of prayers promised. I bet its about one in a thousand. “And I’ll be praying for you too. Well, gotta go! You take care.” “Take care” is our way of saying, “I’m done with this conversation and I want to get out of here but I don’t want to appear rude so I’ll say something that sounds meaningful and caring,” but in truth, Dave doesn’t give a rip about Bob.”

D – Today’s input: What do you really think about those people you pass along the way? If you even think anything about them. If you are like me, I’ll admit, I have to say that I don’t look at everyone the same way Jesus would look at them and I have a long way to go to get there. I think it would be good for us all to try and be kind to everyone even if we don’t want to.

E – Today’s prayer focus: When you tell someone you will pray for them, pray for them!

F – Encouragement and closing thoughts: Remember that today you are being prayed for and if you take a look at the list of names this has been sent to, you too can be praying for others.

Day 11

Day 11 – Friday August 14th

A – Today’s reading of the day is James Chapter 1 (Day 11 starts our 3rd time through James. I will be using the Message Translation this time around.)

Focal verse today is James 1:12 “Anyone who meets a testing challenge head-on and manages to stick it out is mighty fortunate. For such persons loyally in love with God, the reward is life and more life.”

Review of the day: Verse 3 “You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true color.” Verse 8 “adrift at sea, keeping all your options open.” Verse 21 “So throw all spoiled virtue and cancerous evil in the garbage. In simple humility, let our gardener, God, landscape you with the Word, making a salvation-garden of your life.”

“USEFUL THINGS I CAN DO: Be nice. Make a bed. Dig a hole. Write books. Sing alto or bass. Read a map. Drive a car.
USEFUL THINGS I CAN’T DO: Chop down big trees and cut them into lumber or firewood. Handle a horse, train a dog, or tend a herd of animals. Handle a boat without panicking the others. Throw a fastball, curve, or slider. Load, shoot, and clean a gun. Or bow and arrow. Or use either of them, or a spear, net, snare, boomerang, or blowgun, to obtain meat. Defend myself with my bare hands.”

D – Today’s input: I don’t think many people are actually “mighty fortunate” and it is a shame. I say that because how many of us meet our testing challenges head-on and manage to stick it out oh let’s say more then 90% of the time? 75% of the time? 50% of the time? What is your true color when under pressure at work? At home? With our friends? When we don’t think anyone is around? Gotchya there didn’t I? I know that I find myself like Verse 8 says adrift because I don’t or won’t take the stand that I need to. Especially around co-workers, so called friends, and even strangers who we think we will never see again. We need to let God work us and let His boldness show through us.

E – Today’s prayer focus: The ability to turn everything over to God. Our selves, our lives, our families, or jobs, our thoughts, our actions, our…

F – Encouragement and closing thoughts: Let God work in us. Do what He wants you to do. Be bold! Be a man!

Day 10

Day 10 – Thursday August 13th

A – Today’s reading of the day is James Chapter 5 (NIV for me)

Focal verse today is James 5:8 “You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.”

Review of the day: Verse 2 “Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your cloths.” Verse 5 “You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter.” Verse 13 “Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise.” Verses 19-20 “My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins.”

“Let’s take another desire – why does a man long for a battle to fight? Because when we enter the story in Genesis, we step into a world at war. The lines have already been drawn. Evil is waiting to make its next move. Somewhere back before Eden, in the mystery of eternity past, there was a coup, a rebellion, an assassination attempt. Lucifer, the prince of angels, the captain of the guard, rebelled against the Trinity. He tried to take the throne of heaven by force, assisted by a third of the angelic army, in whom he instilled his own malice. They failed, and were hurled from the presence of the Trinity. But they were not destroyed, and the battle is not over. God now has an enemy and so do we. Man is not born into a sitcom or a soap opera; he is born into a world at war. This is not Home Improvement; it’s Saving Private Ryan. There will be many, many battles to fight on many different battlefields.”

D – Today’s input: The world tends to have its influence on us whether in big or small ways. The sad part is that so much of the time we allow it. Why? Because we give up, give in. We have reasons or should I say excuses. Where does this begin and where does this end? With sin and even more so the middle letter of sIn. We have to fight and continue to fight because if we don’t, look what will be lost, our life and possibly that of our family our loved ones our dearest friends, all the way through mankind.

E – Today’s prayer focus: Strength to fight the true fight. To keep focus on Him.

F – Encouragement and closing thoughts: You’ve heard the phrase “Never fear Underdog is here”. How about the phrase “Never fear Almighty God is here”!

Day 9

Day 9 – Wednesday August 12th

A – Today’s reading of the day is James Chapter 4 (NIV for me)

Focal verse today is James 4:10 “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.”

“Why have I said all this about our search for validation and the answer to our question? Because we cannot hear the real answer until we see we’ve got a false one. So long as we chase the illusion, how can we face reality? The hunger is there; it lives in our souls like a famished craving, no matter what we’ve tried to fill it with.”

D – Today’s input:
On me knees before you oh my Lord.
My tears up to you I lift.
My tears of sorrow, joy, happiness, and pain.
For this is my entire gift.

I do this not for me, but for you my Lord.
To you all I do give.
To you my life, time, family, and friends.
For only you I must live.

Who or what is higher than you my Lord?
No one can even dare.
No one is as big, strong, loving, and caring.
For this is what I must share.

Nothing will come before you my Lord.
You are the first and last.
You are Father, Savior, Teacher, and Friend.
That wipes the sin of past.

E – Today’s prayer focus: Ask and tell God to be first in your life. Ask Him to show you what you need to let go of so that you can grasp Him.

F – Encouragement and closing thoughts: We have three weeks of preparation left. Maybe the excitement is starting to dim some. Maybe you are starting to think that the prep is getting boring and that you don’t want to put much thought and time into it. WAKE UP! You are three weeks away from what can be one of the biggest events of your life and the more you put into it the more you will get out of it. Focus on Him and what He has for you!

Day 8

Day 8 – Tuesday August 11th

A – Today’s reading of the day is James Chapter 3 (NIV for me)

Focal verse today is James 3:18 “Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.”

Review of the day: Verse 2 “We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep this whole body in check.” Verse 10 “Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.” Verse 13 “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.” Verse 17 “But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.”

B – RHEMA Strike Verse of the day: Jeremiah 17:9: “The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Depravity/black)

C – Excerpt from “Wild at Heart” by John Eldridge:
“If a man does not find those things for which his heart is made, if he is never even invited to live for them from his deep heart, he will look for them in some other way. … A man bears the image of God in his strength, not so much physically but soulfully.”

D – Today’s input: I like the format of verse 2. It starts out with the obvious that we all stumble. It finishes with a statement of what we fall short on, a perfect man. But it is done in a way that makes me think that it is something we should strive for even though we know it is not possible. That is the object. Press forward with everything you got. Verse 10, to me, is a continuation. Just because we can physically curse (or complain) we shouldn’t. Then look at the wonderfulness of verses 13 and 17. It is our way to prove to ourselves that it is obtainable. That we have a source and a destination that is so much higher then us but so much available, daily, hourly, to the minute and the smallest second.

E – Today’s prayer focus: Pray for wisdom (and seek it). Pray for a passion for life (in Him). Pray to overcome our shortfalls. Pray for everyone this email is going out to.

F – Encouragement and closing thoughts: Be pure, be peace-loving, be considerate, be submissive, be full of mercy and good fruit, and be impartial and sincere. Step up to the plate and give it your best swing.

Day 7

Day 7 – Monday August 10th

A – Today’s reading of the day is James Chapter 2 (NIV for me this second time around.)

Focal verse today is James 2:22 “You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.”

Review of the day: Verse 1 “My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don’t show favoritism.” Verse 4 “have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?” Verse 5 “Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?” Verse 8 “If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right.” Verse 14 “What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds?” Verse 24 “You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.”

B – RHEMA Strike Verse of the day: Jeremiah 17:9: “The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Depravity/black)

C – Excerpt from “Wild at Heart” by John Eldridge:
“-adventure is written into the heart of a man. And it’s not just about having “fun.” Adventure requires something of us, puts us to the test. Though we may fear the test, at the same time we yearn to be tested, to discover that we have what it takes.”

D – Today’s input: I am reminded of a part of a verse in a song: “Have (or Can) others seen Jesus in you?” And if I may somewhat quote something that Pastor Dale once said: “If you were put on trial for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you of being a Christian?”

E – Today’s prayer focus: Strength to be the “Man” God wants you to be. Strength to do those things that you know are right and to avoid doing (and even the appearance) of doing those things that are wrong.

F – Encouragement and closing thoughts: God has given us everything we need to “walk in His ways”, “keep His statutes”, “His commandments”, “His ordinances”, and “His testimonies”. We just need to take up the doing. Who’s with me?
